I ran several workshops with the wonderful Laneway Learning organization. Laneway Learning promotes affordable and accessible education, and hosts a varied range of classes in relaxed environments like cafes and galleries.
The workshops I ran were called ‘Collaborative Art – Drawing Together’. Each student has a piece of paper and pen. They begin by setting a theme and making marks on the paper that is in front of them. After a few minutes, the sheet is passed along to the person on their left, and they receive a new drawing from someone else. Students then have to contribute to this drawing, and someone else will contribute to theirs. This process goes along for several rounds until the page is filled. This technique often yields imaginative, surprising ideas!
The sessions were the perfect combination of several things I passionately advocate and practice – education, letting go of the inner critic and drawing with people.
